The holidays are here so bring on the tasty treats! There just isn’t any better way to celebrate during the holiday season than with good food. So, I thought I’d start by sharing a fun story and a great recipe for a fantastic sandwich.
It was about this same time last year, during lunch at a local cafe, that I first experienced what my co-workers and I have so appropriately nick-named “Turkey Heaven”. It’s simply a perfect combination of salty, tart, and sweet and quite honestly, it may be one of the best tasting sandwich creations that I’ve ever eaten. Unfortunately, it’s only served as a random special and it’s not on the normal everyday menu. I tell ya, if that sandwich was on the menu, I’d be in for it at least twice a week!
Ever since that first taste of “Turkey Heaven”, we’d been going back, going back, and going back. Unfortunately our timing was off and we just hadn’t been able to find that delicious sandwich on special again. We tried asking the cafe owners when it would be served again. They did’t seem to know or have any sort of mailing list that will let us know the specials in advance. All year we yearned for another taste of “Turkey Heaven”.
All but forgotten, last week I had to take a quick lunch break and I pondered on a quick bite that I could pick up and bring back to the office. I thought to myself, “It was about this time last year. What are the chances that the beloved Turkey Heaven sandwich would be served today?”. So with that I decided to give it a try. I mean, the food is good anyhow, and I could always get a BLT and some soup right? As I entered the building, I was is disbelief. I could smell it from the lobby, and as I walked in the door, I saw it listed on the “specials” menu. Roasted Turkey and Brie sandwich, aka “Turkey Heaven”. YES!
So, right after placing my order, I promptly called, emailed, and sent messages to the rest of the lunch crew so that they had fair warning as to what they were about to miss. They needed to get down to the cafe quickly! I took mine to go so I don’t know for sure, but it’s highly plausible that there was a small mob scene shortly after I left. I’m just sayin’!
While I wish I had photos to of the famous “Turkey Heaven” sandwich. If I did, I would share them with you in this post. The problem is that I ate my sandwich too quickly so I guess they’ll have to wait until my next encounter with “Turkey Heaven”. Hopefully sooner than the fall of 2012!
I don’t have the exact chef’s recipe or procedure, but I can tell you the ingredients so that you can try to make your own version of “Turkey Heaven” at home. While some things shouldn’t be messed with, I do have a couple of ideas that I may try for alternate versions. Hopefully they will be just as delightful.
Recipe: Turkey Heaven Sandwich
Ingredients
- Roasted turkey breast (sliced)
- Brie cheese
- Cranberry mayonnaise
- Lettuce
- Torta bread
- Green apple (thinly sliced)
Preparation Instructions
Take the torta and add a good helping of the roasted turkey and then top it with sliced brie. Toast the sandwich just long enough to warm the turkey and melt the brie. Add a layer of the thinly sliced green apple. Add a layer of crisp lettuce. Now spread some of the cranberry mayonnaise on the other half of the torta to complete your “Turkey Heaven” sandwich. Enjoy!

did this happen to be in San Diego at a large insurance company building with a local cafe inside?
I’m pretty sure you’ve also discovered the wonderful “Turkey Heaven” sandwich Sue! At the time that I put together this article, I was unaware that the cafe had an online presence. Here is their web site > http://pacificcafecatering.com/
